People that are used to work with Windows XP often ask me how to get the classic start menu back in Windows 7. Microsoft removed the option to select the classic start menu in the Properties so we need to install some software to get it back.
There are several tools that can help you to achieve this, but we need only one so let's look at the best freeware option available and that's Classic Shell.
To download it, go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/classicshell/files/ and click on the first file available.
After installing, your new START menu will look like this:
The best thing is, that if you still want to open the new START menu, you can hold SHIFT while clicking on START and you will open the new Windows 7 menu.
